Research and Documentation of the tangible and intangible cultural heritage of manuscript and mural paintings in Virupaksha temple in Hampi and other prominent Vijayanagara sites. The research will be aimed at gathering, analysing and annotating art, historical and cultural content (visual and textual) that adds to the existing body or knowledge on Vijayanagara manuscript and mural paintings in different languages and media.

Art and cultural scholars of CHATS and NIAS will be supported by IIACD technologists in preparing the “markups” for ontological classification of the researched art, historical and cultural content. They will co-create an open access cultural knowledge bank with a digital archive dedicated to the tangible and intangible heritage of Vijayanagara manuscript and mural paintings. The team will also collaborate with and the output from this project will also be made available to the IIT Kharagpur, Mumbai & Chennai IDH technology teams interested in digital in-painting, image restoration/regeneration technologies for mural paintings.

A mural at the Tiruppudaimaruthur temple in Tirunelveli district in Tamil Nadu, shows the emissaries of the Vijayanagara king Achyutadeva Raya serving an ultimatum to the Travancore ruler Bhoothala Veera Udaya Marthanda Varma to pay tributes to him and return the Pandya territory to Sri Vallabhan. It also depicts the “Tamiraparani battle” between the armies of Achyutadeva Raya and Bhoothala Varma.. more
